The US Air Force (USAF) maintains a fleet of 186 F-22 Raptor stealth fighters, referred to by many as the most advanced fighter jet ever created.

Any deployment of these fighters to a situation signals a serious commitment by the United States to its allies and partners.

The aircraft's unparalleled stealth and maneuverability and advanced payloads make it a lethal and essential part of the USAF inventory.

After two decades of success, the USAF has chosen the F-22 to serve as the base model for the 6th generation fighter, a part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program.

NGAD is meant to carry the speed, stealth and power of the F-22 into the next generation.

The F-22's engines produce more thrust than any other fighter's engine. It is the fastest stealth fighter in the world, flying with unparalleled dexterity and maneuverability.

Its speed varies by altitude: at high altitudes, it can fly at supersonic speeds of Mach 2.25 or 2,780km per hour, and, at sea level, the F-22 flies at Mach 1.21 or 1,500km per hour.

It is distinguished from other aircraft by its supercruise capability, or its ability to cruise at Mach 1.5 or over without the use of afterburners for extended periods. This enables the aircraft to conserve fuel and extend its range in combat.

Further boosting its >3,000km base range, two external fuel tanks offer an extra 11,800kg of fuel.

An M61A2 20mm cannon is internally mounted, and internal side weapon bays carry two AIM-9 infrared air-to-air missiles.

The internal weapon bays can carry six AIM-120 radar-guided Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, which achieve supersonic speeds of Mach 4 (4,930km per hour) and ranges of more than 48km.

When outfitted with AIM-120s, the F-22 can deftly strike adversary targets and quickly depart before any other fighter aircraft could even engage it.

For air-to-ground strikes, the F-22 carries two 453.6kg GBU-32 Joint Direct Attack Munitions and two AIM-120s.

Its ability to survive is enhanced not only by its speed but also by low-observable technologies that bolster stealth capabilities.

Just like its namesake, the F-22 can fly in, devour its opponent and rapidly depart.
