The Columbia-class submarine (SSBN) represents the next generation of ballistic missile submarines being designed for the US Navy.

This new class is set to replace the Ohio-class SSBNs, which have been the cornerstone of the US strategic nuclear deterrent since the 1980s.

Equipped with submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), the Columbia-class will deploy the Trident II D5 missiles, featuring 16 missile launch tubes with enhanced operational capabilities.

A reduced fleet, increased availability

Unlike the 14 Ohio-class submarines currently in service, the US Navy plans to build 12 Columbia-class vessels.

This reduction reflects advancements in nuclear technology, particularly the elimination of mid-life reactor refueling due to improved reactor designs.

Ohio-class submarines require two to four years offline for refueling during their service life; a process the Columbia-class will entirely bypass.

As a result, the new submarines will offer continuous availability for 40 to 50 years.

The first submarine in the class, USS Columbia, commenced construction in 2020 and is expected to enter service in 2031.

The US Navy has scheduled the commissioning of one Columbia-class submarine every two years, ensuring consistent fleet modernization.

At 170 meters long, 13 meters wide and 20,810 tons submerged, the Columbia-class will be the US Navy's largest submarine ever built.

Its design includes a nuclear reactor paired with an advanced electric-drive system that reduces acoustic emissions, dramatically enhancing stealth capabilities.

Industry experts forecast that these submarines will be the quietest ever built, featuring specialized hull coatings and noise-damping machinery to prevent detection.

Additionally, the Columbia-class can launch MK-48 torpedoes and UGM-84 Harpoon missiles, offering formidable versatility for defense and attack missions.

Like its predecessor, the Columbia-class will carry a crew of 155 officers and enlisted personnel.
