Combined Task Force 153 (CTF 153) is an integral part of the US Naval Forces Central Command and Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

Established in April 2022, CTF 153 is one of five task forces under CMF.

The primary mission of CTF 153 is to enhance maritime security in a crucial area that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Focusing on security operations with an emphasis on ensuring safe navigation and reducing illicit activities in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden.

The purpose of CTF 153 is to safeguard regional stability and international trade by combating threats in these crucial waterways.

Forces from several CMF member nations cooperate under CTF 153 to deter smuggling, piracy and other illicit maritime activities.

Challenges and threats

These waterways are critical global shipping lanes, connecting the Indian Ocean to Europe via the Suez Canal.

The Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea are critical choke points for oil shipments from the Middle East to global markets.

These threats include targeting oil tankers and causing disruptions to waterways.

Leadership and collaboration

Egypt's leadership of CTF 153 highlights its expanding role within the CMF and its commitment to regional maritime security.

Egypt first assumed command of CTF 153 in December 2022 and then again in April 2025.

As one of the most capable naval powers in the Middle East and North Africa, Egypt brings strategic expertise and operational strength to the task force.

Its command has facilitated increased coordination with regional and international partners, enhancing maritime domain awareness and joint operational readiness.

CTF 153 operates as a collaborative platform for CMF member nations to share intelligence, conduct joint patrols and execute training exercises.

This multinational approach strengthens interoperability, and fosters trust among participating countries, reinforcing collective security efforts.

Through unified action, CTF 153 plays a vital role in maintaining stability and safeguarding global maritime trade routes.
