The Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), led by US Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), is a multinational coalition dedicated to ensuring maritime security and stability.

Its mission focuses on ensuring safe navigation through some of the world’s most strategically important waterways.

A global coalition for maritime security

Comprised of 34 member nations, CMF operates under the maritime component of US Central Command (USCENTCOM).

Member countries include the US, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, France and others.

The coalition's mission spans vast and strategic regions, including the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, the Arab Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

These waters are vital for global commerce and are often threatened by piracy, terrorism and smuggling.

Task forces target maritime threats

CMF is structured into four primary task forces, each with a distinct operational focus.

Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) conducts maritime security and counterterrorism operations, intercepting illicit cargo that could fund extremist groups.

Combined Task Force 151 (CTF 151) is tasked with combating piracy, particularly in the waters off Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.

This mission has been critical in reducing pirate activity and ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels.

Combined Task Force 152 (CTF 152) focuses on maintaining maritime security in the Arabian Gulf, working closely with regional partners to deter threats and promote stability.

Combined Task Force 153 (CTF 153) is the newest addition, concentrating on the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

This area is a key chokepoint for global trade and has seen increased instability in recent years.

In 2025, CMF launched Combined Task Force 154 to standardize training across coalition and incorporate lessons learned from past operations.

This initiative aims to enhance interoperability and readiness among member nations.

Headquartered in Manama, Bahrain, CMF works in close coordination with NAVCENT and the US Fifth Fleet.

The coalition also partners with international organizations and other maritime coalitions, including NATO and the EU, to ensure unified efforts in securing global maritime domains.
