Established in January 2009, Combined Task Force 151 (CTF 151) is a critical component of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

This multinational naval partnership is dedicated to ensuring regional maritime security, countering piracy and safeguarding the free flow of commerce in the Middle East's waters.

The CMF is headquartered in Bahrain and operating under the US Naval Forces Central Command (USNAVCENT).

CTF 151's mission is to conduct counter-piracy operations, addressing threats in regions such as the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Strategic role within the Combined Maritime Forces

CTF 151 forms part of a broader coalition of several task forces within the CMF, each specializing in specific missions like counterterrorism, counter-smuggling and maritime security.

The task force operates through coordinated patrols and operations, involving contributions from various countries' naval vessels and personnel.

This cooperative effort enhances the task force's ability to deter and mitigate pirate attacks effectively.

Since its inception, CTF 151 has played a pivotal role in combatting piracy and ensuring the safety of international maritime trade in piracy-threatened areas.

Between 2009 and 2011, during the peak of Somali piracy, CTF 151 achieved significant success in deterring and mitigating pirate attacks.

These efforts, in cooperation with others, resulted in numerous arrests of pirate gangs and the successful rescue of hijacked vessels and their crews.

Multinational leadership and collaborative successes

One notable operation in 2011 involved the rescue of 23 sailors from a hijacked Somali pirate vessel.

The rescue required highly coordinated operations among several multinational naval assets.

Such missions highlight the task force's capability to execute complex rescue operations and safeguard maritime security.

As of October 2025, Rear Admiral Marcelo Lancellotti of the Brazilian Navy commands Task Force 151.

The task force has previously been commanded by naval officers from the US, the UK, South Korea, Pakistan and Turkey, illustrating its international leadership.

CTF 151 also collaborates with international organizations such as NATO and the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) to address piracy and other maritime threats.

Joint patrols with NATO and EU NAVFOR have been instrumental in maintaining regional security.

The US Carrier Strike Group (CSG) in the region significantly bolsters CTF 151's operations, even though the CSG is not directly integrated into the task force.

CTF 151 is a cornerstone of maritime security in the Middle East, exemplifying international cooperation and dedication to safeguarding global maritime commerce.

Its continued efforts and partnerships are vital in ensuring a secure and stable maritime environment.
