The A-10 Thunderbolt II, known as the "Warthog," will be featured at this year’s Dubai Airshow, underscoring its enduring legacy in modern air warfare.
Renowned for its durability and precision, the A-10 has long been a cornerstone of US and allied air power, particularly in close air support (CAS) missions across the Middle East.
Its first major combat role came during the 1991 Gulf War, when it flew over 8,000 sorties.
The aircraft’s precision and firepower proved decisive in destroying tanks, armored vehicles, and fortified positions—cementing its reputation as a formidable ground-attack platform.
Between 2001 and 2021, the A-10 continued to demonstrate its battlefield value during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Its ability to loiter over combat zones, fly at low speeds, and integrate closely with Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) made it indispensable for protecting coalition troops in rugged terrain.
Operating at altitudes as low as 300 meters, the A-10 delivered pinpoint strikes using advanced targeting pods and precision-guided munitions, minimizing collateral damage while maximizing effect.
At the heart of its power lies the GAU-8/A Avenger -- a seven-barrel, 30 mm cannon capable of firing up to 3,900 rounds per minute.
This signature weapon can devastate armored columns within seconds.
The A-10’s titanium armor and redundant control systems further enhance its survivability, allowing it to withstand direct hits from 23 mm rounds and continue flying -- a testament to its combat resilience.
Combat-proven against ISIS
The A-10 again demonstrated its might during Operation Inherent Resolve, launched in 2014 against the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS).
In that campaign, it destroyed logistics hubs, convoys, oil facilities, and defensive positions with surgical precision.
Its capacity to remain on station over hostile territory and respond quickly to emerging threats made it a trusted ally for coalition ground forces.
The aircraft’s rugged airframe and powerful twin engines allow it to operate in harsh desert conditions and from austere airfields where other aircraft might struggle.
Its versatility extends beyond attack missions: as a combat search and rescue (CSAR) escort -- known informally as the "Sandy" -- the A-10 locates and suppresses threats, coordinates rescue teams, and shields helicopters during extractions.
While it does not conduct the extractions itself, it plays a critical role in directing and safeguarding recovery operations in contested environments.
Combining unmatched firepower, survivability, and versatility, the A-10 Thunderbolt II remains a symbol of American precision and endurance.
Its presence at the 2025 Dubai Airshow reaffirms the aircraft’s operational relevance and highlights the United States’ continued partnership and defense cooperation in the Middle East.
