The US Navy has double trouble for adversaries with the F-35C Lightning II and the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet -- two carrier-based fighter jets with distinct capabilities and strengths that have great synergy working together.

The F-35C Lightning II has stealth, while the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet packs a punch. Together, they form a lethal duo.

Operating in tandem, they create a formidable force that leverages stealth, advanced sensor technology and substantial firepower.

The F-35C Lightning II, the carrier variant of the fifth-generation stealth fighter, excels in penetrating contested airspace undetected, gathering critical intelligence and identifying targets with precision.

While its stealth design necessitates a lighter weapons load to maintain low observability, the F-35C can obtain precise intelligence on targets without detection, passing it on to the heavily armed Super Hornets.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet boasts a larger payload capacity and impressive ordnance, allowing it to carry a diverse array of munitions.

As a 4.5-generation multirole fighter, its design incorporates measures to reduce its radar cross-section, such as radar-absorbing materials and refined airframe shaping.

The latest Block III upgrades have made the Super Hornet stealthier and more survivable, with additional treatments that reduce the jet's radar cross section.

These features enhance its survivability in contested environments and enable it to work closely with the F-35C.

Advanced synergy

Operating together, the F-35C can relay target information to the Super Hornet, enabling precise strikes while minimizing exposure to enemy defenses. This partnership enables the F-35C to remain undercover.

A cornerstone of the F-35C and Super Hornet partnership is their integration into network-centric warfare systems.

The F-35C's advanced sensors and communication suites enable it to function as its own airborne warning and control system, or a so-called "mini-AWACS."

It has a powerful radar, 360 degree optical vision and can gather and disseminate real-time battlefield information. The aircraft also has the most advanced and comprehensive sensor suite of any fighter jet in history.

Through data links like Link 16, battlefield information can be shared with other assets, including the Super Hornet, enhancing situational awareness and coordination across the fleet.

The synergy between the F-35C and Super Hornet extends to various mission profiles. In strike operations, the F-35C can identify and designate targets, allowing the Super Hornet to deliver ordnance from standoff distances.

In air-to-air engagements, the F-35C's sensor suite can detect threats beyond visual range, cueing the Super Hornet to engage with appropriate weaponry.

This collaborative approach maximizes the strengths of each platform, providing a versatile and resilient force package.
