The Truman Carrier Strike Group (CSG) last month took part in major strikes against Iran-backed Houthi targets in Sanaa and other coastal locations in Yemen, demonstrating its immense firepower.

The CSG's ships and aircraft on December 30 and 31 targeted a Houthi command-and-control facility and advanced conventional weapon production and storage facilities that included missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

The targeted facilities "were used in Houthi operations, such as attacks against US Navy warships and merchant vessels in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden," the statement added.

US Navy and US Air Force aircraft destroyed a Houthi coastal radar site and seven cruise missiles and one-way attack UAVs over the Red Sea, it said.

Footage released by CENTCOM showed at least three F/A-18E/F Super Hornets launching from the Truman's deck, alongside the firing of two Tomahawk missiles from an accompanying destroyer.

The CSG entered the Middle East on December 14.

It currently includes the Nimitz-class USS Truman, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg and the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Stout and USS Jason Dunham.

The recent strikes were part of CENTCOM's effort to degrade the Houthi threat to regional partners and military and merchant vessels in the region, it said.

The Iran-allied group in Yemen has been bombarding commercial shipping in the Red Sea for more than a year.

Targeted firepower

The Truman CSG is equipped and manned to perform at the highest level, and is capable of operating for 90 days without replenishment.

Its powerful Carrier Air Wing One (CVW-1) is composed of eight squadrons and one detachment, with about 36 F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters on board for both air-to-surface and air-to-air strike missions.

The Super Hornet is the US Navy's supersonic, twin-engine multi-role fighter that can reach heights of 15,240 meters at a top speed of Mach 1.6 (1,975km/h).

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet performs traditional missions of fighter escort, fleet air defense, interdiction and close air support, while retaining excellent fighter and self-defense capabilities.

The CSG's surface ships provide massive firepower.

The USS Gettysburg's primary armament includes 122 missiles housed in two 61 Mk 41 Vertical Launch Systems (VLSs), enabling it to engage air, surface and subsurface targets effectively.

Meanwhile, the USS Stout has one 29-cell and one 61-cell Mk 41 VLS. The USS Jason Dunham has one 32-cell and one 64-cell VLS.

Combined, the ships are capable of launching more than 300 missiles.
