The Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) is now set to provide the US Marine Corps critical land-based, anti-ship capabilities.
The NMESIS is a mobile, ground-based, anti-ship weapon system designed to support land-to-sea attacks for the US Marine Corps.
It is made up of a Naval Strike Missile (NSM) launcher unit, capable of launching two NSMs, mounted on top of the chassis of an uncrewed version of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) known as the Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires.
The NSM, which has a 227kg warhead and programmable fuse, is designed to escape enemy radar detection by maneuvering evasively and flying close to sea level. The missile has a range in excess of 185km.
The US Department of Defense (DoD) in April finalized a contract for low rate initial production (LRIP) of the NMESIS in a deal worth almost $50 million.
Under the deal, the LRIP units are expected to be completed by August 2027.
The US Marine Corps conducted the first successful test of the NMESIS off the coast of California in April 2021.
Denial and control
The NMESIS supports the US Marine Corps' new concept of distributed operations, which would have Marines fighting in small groups in a distributed manner in any major conflict.
With the NMESIS, US Central Command (CENTCOM) and Marine Corps Forces Central Command (MARCENT) could deploy highly mobile small units along the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Bab al-Mandeb Strait and Red Sea to achieve decisive denial and control.
The NMESIS' maneuverability and mobility, alongside its autonomous and teleoperated modes, are critical to its mission and in increasing the survivability of Marines.
"Everything our adversaries have designed over the last 20-30 years are intended to counter [the DoD's] ships and aircraft," Joe McPherson, program manager for Long Range Fires at Marine Corps Systems Command, said in a statement in September 2021.
"The Marine Corps bringing a ground-based solution complicates [the adversary's] ability to counter our anti-ship capabilities since ground-based launchers, as we've found in previous wars, are hard to find," he said.
"This is what NMESIS brings to the fight -- a launcher that is survivable inside the enemy's weapons engagement zone."
