The United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base, is one of the 11 unified combatant commands within the Department of War.
USSTRATCOM is tasked with ensuring strategic nuclear deterrence, executing global strike operations and managing the Department's Global Information Grid.
Additionally, the command plays a critical role supporting other combatant commands through integrated missile defense and global command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
By maintaining these capabilities, USSTRATCOM enables the US to rapidly respond to worldwide threats and secure strategic stability.
Capabilities and operational reach
USSTRATCOM employs a range of advanced tools, including nuclear forces, cyber operations, electronic warfare, missile defense and intelligence capabilities.
These assets ensure the US can deter aggression and decisively respond should deterrence fail.
Beyond deterring threats, USSTRATCOM works to assure allies, shape adversary behavior and adapt to evolving threats posed by terrorism and emerging technologies.
This command is also pivotal in defining and developing the military force of the future.
The Global Operations Center (GOC) is USSTRATCOM's nerve center, ensuring global awareness and command of strategic forces for mission-critical operations.
The Underground Command Complex at Offutt AFB serves as an alternate missile warning correlation center, supplementing capabilities provided by the Cheyenne Mountain Missile Warning Center.
This complex is also the primary source of missile warning data, which is critical for survival and management of strategic forces.
USSTRATCOM's Airborne Command Post, "Looking Glass," ensures command and communication with nuclear forces if ground-based command centers are rendered inoperable.
Strategic component commands
USSTRATCOM oversees and directs several specialized component commands tasked with executing its global mission.
The Joint Forces Air Component Command (JFACC), Barksdale AFB, is primarily responsible for delivering nuclear and conventional strikes via bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
Under JFACC's direct supervision, the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) manages nuclear-capable B-52 bombers and ICBM forces.
The Barksdale Air Force Base has previously demonstrated remarkable readiness by rapidly preparing and deploying multiple bombers with little notice, showcasing its operational efficiency.
Maritime operations, Joint Force Maritime Component Command (JFMCC), Norfolk, Virginia, executes strategic deterrence missions in the naval domain, supported by US Fleet Forces Command (USFFC).
Land, the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC) provides expertise in space and missile defense operations, extending capabilities into emerging and contested domains.
With its advanced systems and operations spanning air, land, sea and cyber domains, US Strategic Command remains integral to ensuring America's security and global stability.
